Dynamic vs. Static Facial Assessment
Why movement, compensation, asymmetry, and baseline structure matter before a treatment plan is built.
Explore CoursesDownload the AppStatic assessment shows structure at rest. Dynamic assessment shows how expression, compensation, asymmetry, and muscle recruitment change that structure during movement. High-quality aesthetic planning uses both.
Why static inspection is not enough
A face can appear balanced at rest and behave very differently during animation. Brow elevation, frowning, smiling, squinting, lip movement, and jaw contraction reveal functional patterns that a still photograph cannot.
What learners should document
Baseline symmetry, resting proportions, relevant movement patterns, compensatory recruitment, previous treatment effects, and the patient's stated goals should be recorded before a plan is finalized.
The educational objective
The goal is not to memorize a fixed map. It is to develop a repeatable assessment sequence that supports individualized planning and safer clinical reasoning.
